BCNET continually improves and expands the advanced network, a shared high-speed, high-capacity fibre optic network that spans 1,400 kilometers across B.C. This digital infrastructure is dedicated to the needs of research and higher education and is a community-owned, managed and operated network.
Attend this session to find out about the recent upgrades to member sites, expansion of BCNET in the Victoria area, as well as the network management tools, systems, software and resources that are enabling higher education members to efficiently manage and run the network.
Marilyn Hay, Network Engineering Manager, BCNET
Marilyn Hay is the Manager of Network Planning and BCNET at the University of British Columbia (UBC). She is responsible for the planning and design of the UBC campus networks and also the management, operation, and engineering of the provincial education and research network BCNET. Her management role at BCNET includes a team that spans the peer Information Technology Networking groups of BCNET’s member universities. Marilyn has 25 years experience in computing, network support, and management, a Computing Technology Diploma at SAIT in Calgary, and a B.Sc. in Computer Science from UBC.
Andree Toonk, Network Architect, BCNET
Andree Toonk received his M.Sc. degree in System and Network Engineering from the University of Amsterdam and has several years of professional experience working with research networks. His specialties include optical networks, control plane technologies and IPv6.
As a BCNET Network Analyst, Andree’s primary focus is on the BCNET network architecture. While living in The Netherlands, Andree was a member of the network research group at SARA Computing and Networking Services. Most of Andree’s work was on behalf of SURFnet, the Dutch national research network and the largest open lightpath exchange in Europe, NetherLight. Before that Andree worked at the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX), the worlds largest Internet exchange.
Andree is the author of open source and communities tools such as the Perl TL1-Toolkit and BGPmon.net. Andree is also the co-author of several papers.
Scott Jamieson, President & Chief Operating Officer and Director, A2B Fiber
Scott Jamieson is the President and CTO of a2b Fiber, an open access fiber network provider and construction services firm he founded in 2006. Scott has 20 years of Fibre Network Engineering and Operations experience, including five years as the National Manager of the Fibre Optic Engineering Department of Group Telecom, with management responsibility for a $100M capital budget for network deployment and 400,000 fibre kilometers of plant, 15 employees in offices from coast to coast, and fibre systems responsibility within a company with a quarter billion revenue run rate and over a billion dollars in financing.
